How Many Bundles Do I Need for a Full Head?

The most common question we get before an order is: how many bundles do I actually need? Buy too few and the install looks thin at the back. Buy too many and you waste money on hair you will never install.

Here is the guide we give every customer.

Chart showing how many bundles of hair are needed by length: 2 pcs for 12-18 inch, 2-3 for 20-22, 3-4 for 24-30

The short answer

  • 12" – 14": 2 pcs
  • 16" – 18": 2 pcs
  • 20" – 22": 2 – 3 pcs
  • 24" – 26": 3 – 4 pcs
  • 28" – 30": 3 – 4 pcs

Bundle count at a glance

Finish length Bundles needed
12" – 14" 2 pcs
16" – 18" 2 pcs
20" – 22" 2 – 3 pcs
24" – 26" 3 – 4 pcs
28" – 30" 3 – 4 pcs

Why length changes the count

A shorter bundle and a much longer bundle can sit at similar weight, but the longer hair is spread over twice the surface area. That is why long hair looks thinner at the same bundle count — you are covering more head with the same amount of hair.

When to add a bundle

  • You are at the top of a range and want the hair to look very full, not just covered.
  • Your natural hair underneath is thick, so the bundles sit on top of cornrows rather than your scalp.
  • You want a deep side part or a lot of volume at the crown.

What about closure and frontal?

A closure covers a small circle at the crown, a frontal covers the whole front hairline ear to ear. Either one replaces the bundle that would otherwise sit at the front, so when you use one, the counts above are still enough — the closure is doing the work at the top.

Our bundle + closure sets take the guesswork out: the bundles and the closure are matched so the texture and colour line up.

Choosing between the low and high number

Take the lower number if you like a natural, slightly relaxed finish. Take the higher number if you want the hair to look dense and full, which is what most people mean when they say "I want it to look like a wig".

Quick checklist before you order

  1. Decide the finish length — the longest bundle sets the look.
  2. Pick the count from the table above.
  3. Add one if your natural hair is thick or you want extra volume.
  4. Add a closure or frontal if you want a natural parting.
  5. Message us the length and what you are building — we will confirm the count before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 2 bundles instead of 3?

Yes — for 12" to 18", two bundles is the standard. For 20" and above, two can work if you want a lighter look, but three gives a fuller finish.

Do I need a separate bundle for the closure?

No. The closure covers the top section on its own; you only count bundles for the rest of the head.

Does the count change if I install a frontal?

No. The frontal replaces the front section, so the bundle counts above stay the same.

What if I want a very full, wig-like look?

Go to the top of the range for your length. For 24" and above, that means 4 bundles.
